Bryant Furlow was nominated for two New Mexico Press Association awards this year and for good reason; his recent series on the Rio Arriba County Jail’s off-label use of prescription drugs to sedate inmates and his piece on the effects of hospital budget cuts on ambulance response teams were terrific. Previously with the New Mexico Business Weekly and the Rio Grande SUN, Bryant is now freelancing and we’re delighted that the Albuquerque-based investigative reporter has joined the SPJ New Mexico chapter.
Freelancing for Demand Studios while working on a novel, Las Cruces-based writer Barbara Alvarez holds two bachelor degrees with the most recent being a BA in Journalism from New Mexico State University.
A non-profit project of the Washington DC-based Center for Independent Media, The New Mexico Independent debuted in April, 2008 as a statewide, online news and politics site. Gwyneth Doland, editor of The New Mexico Independent, is one of our newest chapter members and earned her “creds” as an editor at both the Santa Fe Reporter and the Weekly Alibi.
