There are several new opportunities for recognition and financial support available thrugh SPJ National. Here are brief descriptions of three of these programs
Students First
The Robert D.G. Lewis First Amendment Award is given each year to a student SPJ member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the First Amendment through the field of journalism. From the generosity of the Lewis family, the award includes a scholarship that provides a 2010 SPJ convention registration, two nights at the convention hotel in Las Vegas, and a ticket to the MOE Awards Luncheon where the recipient will be recognized for his/her achievements. $10K for First Amendment Fighters
The Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award is presented by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation to a person or persons who have fought to protect and preserve one or more of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. Annually, an individual, a group of individuals or an organization is chosen for this award that honors its namesake and his commitment to journalism and First Amendment rights. Recipients receive $10,000, transportation to the SPJ national convention and a commemorative crystal award. Nominations are open to any and all in the U.S., and anyone can nominate candidates. $75K Fellowship for Writers
The Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing is intended to enable a mid-career editorial writer or columnist at a U.S. newspaper to have time away from daily responsibilities for study and research. The fellowship awards $75,000 to an outstanding journalist in editorial or column writing. Complete rules and guidelines are here. All application materials must be in English and postmarked by July 1.
