Alexa Schirtzinger, editor of the Santa Fe Reporter and board member for the Rio Grande Chapter, has won a prestigious John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship. Schirtzinger is one of 12 U.S. journalists selected from 100 applicants. She and her colleagues will join eight international journalists also selected for the program at Stanford University for the academic year 2013-14.

The Knight Fellowships program “champions innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership in journalism by helping the fellows pursue their ideas to improve the quality of news and information reaching the public,” according to a release. This will be the 48th year Stanford has offered journalism fellowships.

“My proposal is to save alt-weeklies,” Schirtzinger told the New Mexico Telegram.

Schirtzinger intends to explore how “to use the innovative strengths and contemporary challenges of the modern alternative weekly newspaper as a platform for exploring new revenue models in local journalism.”
