Journalists interested in media ethics can submit essays on press freedom to a contest. The deadline is November 14.

The Essay Topic:  Dissemination of information: government interests, national security and freedom of speech – how to strike the right balance?  In an age where restricting information is increasingly hard for government agencies, increased power of the news media calls for an increased responsibility. Is it OK for the media to tell the truth to the public when national security is at risk? How does a journalist decide if his/her reporting compromises government interests? How does the media avoid confrontation with the government in the wake of such a scenario?

The “Ethicontest,” sponsored by the Center for International Media Ethics (CIME), is open to both aspiring and established writers. Essays should focus on how journalists can balance government interests, national security and freedom of speech. Essays should be no more than 2,000 words.

The winner of the contest will be awarded a scholarship to become certified in “J-Ethinomics” through CIME.
