Have a knack for stories that will mean a lot to parents and children? Can you go past what happens at a board meeting and relate the issues to the classroom? Can you navigate the tons of data that exists on education rankings, test scores and funding mechanisms (without using that word in your story)? We want to hear from you.
The Reno Gazette-Journal/RGJ Media, a Gannet Company is hiring a K-12 education reporter to focus on issues that relate to people in the Washoe County School District. The goal is to keep the school district accountable for providing a high-quality education to students while keeping tabs on the day-to-day issues that resonate throughout the district. This reporter will focus on watchdog reporting as well as celebrating the district’s successes as they come.
You need to be as comfortable asking the hard questions (Is the school district doing enough to prepare students for a new economy in Nevada?) as you are hanging out in a classroom to describe new technology and techniques intended to help students succeed. We expect this reporter to help set the school district’s agenda, not just respond.
This reporter is expected to create a digital personality – embodying the quick wit and news style of Twitter while giving the in-the-know daily tidbits on a blog. You should plan to break news first online, and then craft compelling enterprise for projects.
We’re not about the news you can get anywhere in print – we’ll let people get that on their own (Besides, aren’t constant 12-inch daily stories boring?). We want our education reporter to think big, calling the shots that matter to our readers while focusing on engaged, strong watchdog reporting. We want you to find the stories that people in Reno will remember and matter to them.
