The assistant editor will be responsible for aiding the editorial staff in the production and distribution of news content across print and digital platforms. He/she will produce news reports, publish multimedia content to NMBW’s website and social media platforms, manage content areas across website and print products, edit copy, and work with writers and editors to ensure the timely completion of a variety of news-related tasks. In addition, the assistant editor will aid in the successful execution of strategic initiatives as directed by the editor-in-chief, to whom the position reports.
Duties: Performance of the assistant editor will be evaluated according to the following standards.
- Freelance Writers. Manage and guide a team of freelancers to ensure a steady output
of print and web material spanning web dailies, features, slideshows, beat reporting,
profiles and interviews. Includes generating story ideas, shaping those suggested by
writers and editing stories. - Web Publishing. Oversee the publication process for web content each day following
Morning Edition. Includes entering stories into the CMS, optimizing content in
accordance with SEO best practices, light photo editing and database production. The
assistant editor is also expected to develop web story ideas and contribute two daily
written news items for the web. - Print Edition Pages. Manage the production and completion of the following print
edition pages, working directly with freelancers and interns, and editing drafts. Pages/
sections include: Focus section, Newsmakers page, BizLeads, Calendar, People on the
Move, Top Web Hits, Smart Strategies. Position is responsible for developing concepts
for Focus and Smart Strategies sections. - Social Media. Independently maintain and regularly update NMBW’s Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube accounts. Engage with followers, answer questions,
develop relationships with influencers and distribute company messages. Develop
creative concepts to help execute on social media growth strategies as directed by
editor-in-chief. - Special Publications. Assist managing editor with the production of special
publications, including aiding in the sourcing/coordination of judging panel, photo shoots
and copy production. Edit publication pages as assigned. - Copy editing. Assist with copy editing on weekly basis.
- Other. Serve as backup Morning Edition writer/producer and fulfill other duties as
assigned by the editor-in-chief.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in new media journalism, journalism or English
- One to three years of experience working in a high-volume newsroom
- Experience creating content for print and digital mediums in a fast-paced news
environment - Copy editing experience, with strong knowledge of AP style
- Experience managing production output from freelance writers
- Knowledge of web publishing via CMS
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InCopy, InDesign, Photoshop)
- Ability to produce quality work under deadline
- Adaptability to a dynamic and evolving work environment
- Strong news judgment and organizational skills
- Ability to manage a multitude of tasks while maintaining awareness of upcoming
deadlines - Passion for going the extra mile to get the job done
