In a day, age and economy where some reputable, traditional media are folding even as other, specialty-voice outlets become the “last man standing” source for news distribution, are ethics in journalism relevant – or even possible – to the consumer of that news?
The Society of Professional Journalists Rio Grande Chapter believe the answer is a resounding “yes” and to further that discussion among journalists and the public, will be holding a free public forum this Monday, December 6, in Albuquerque. Funded by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, the event is intended to open up constructive, meaningful discussion between panel experts, journalists and news consumers as to what constitutes “news” and how to differentiate between legitimate news sources and celebrity talking heads, Twitter blasts, blog posts and what’s routinely called “entertainment news.”
The event will focus on what the public receives – and wants to receive – as relevant news these days and what brings true legitimacy and accuracy to what’s being shared with the consumer…including standards in sourcing, fact-checking, reporting and delivery. A formal invitation is forthcoming but we hope all of you will join us at the Monday, December 6th event being held at KNME (Public Television) in Albuquerque from 5:30 to 7 pm. The event is free and refreshments will be provided but please note that space within the studio is limited so please arrive early; seating and occupancy is first-come, first-served.
The address for the studio is 1130 University Blvd, NE and the studio is ADA compliant.
As a member of the working press and of SPJ Rio Grande, we know you have a vested interest in this topic and will want to hear – and share! – in the spirited commentary and debate sure to accompany this topic.
