In mid-March, the Rio Grande Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists teamed with the New Mexico Foundation on Open Government to challenge practices by the Office of the New Mexico Attorney General and the City of Albuquerque that restrict the First Amendment access rights of journalists in New Mexico.
By clicking on the link below, you can download and read the letter sent to the AG’s office. An identical letter was mailed to the City of Albuquerque.
SPJ and NMFOG took action on the issue after receiving complaints from chapter members. If you’re a freelancer or blogger who has been denied access to public information, or if you’ve been taken off a press release list after writing something negative about a public official or agency, please contact Rio Grande Chapter President Julie Ann Grimm at jgrimm@sfnewmexican.com.
