SFUAD Public Relations Manager – Job Description and Requirements

Santa Fe University of Art and Design is seeking a dynamic, strategic public relations manager responsible for developing and executing a fully-integrated media and communication plan designed to help raise the profile of the university. Manager’s activities will include strengthening the universities’ brand awareness in the marketplace, strengthening and broadening relationships with the media, and elevating the universities’ thought-leadership positioning through multiple outreach efforts via traditional, web and new media channels, and managing internal communications for the university.

The PR manager will work in close collaboration with cross-functional teams to manage public relations projects from inception through completion, and will also be responsible for understanding key industry and business trends to proactively identify opportunities as a result of those trends. This position reports to the Director of Communications. Bilingual Spanish-English is a plus. Position will be based in Santa Fe, NM.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Establish and leverage relationships with members of the media to create placement opportunities for our institutions of higher education.
  2. Identify and engage students, alumni, and faculty to discover unique stories and provide recommendations on ways to leverage these stories in local, national and (where appropriate) international media.
  3. Compile inventory of editorial calendars, survey’s, awards and other recognition opportunities (e.g., U.S. News & World Report, Thomson Peterson’s, UCEA awards, etc.) and work with faculty and staff to leverage those opportunities via by-line articles, story pitching and other communications tools as appropriate
  4. Write press releases, web content, and other communications pieces, including media announcements and pitch stories to appropriate media outlets
    1. Secure and coordinate interviews with institution spokespersons and media as directed.
    2. Manage internal editorial and legal review/clearance process for all media materials, including press releases, by-line articles and media announcements, to obtain final drafts that properly include review and clearance of quotes, fact-checking and legal compliance
    3. Use software to create media distributions’ lists, issue press release and monitor media coverage.
    4. Monitor media coverage on a daily basis and create monthly and annual reports for key internal audiences, including the universities’ presidents, faculty chairs, board and advisory committees’ members
    5. Track daily archive of news and social media coverage of industry relevant topics and competitive intelligence (utilizing web alerts, Vocus and Lexis Nexis) and proactively identify actionable opportunities as a result of this information
    6. Assist in establishing and managing the universities’ social media channels, including Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.  Social media management includes developing content, posting of relevant information, monitoring audiences’ interaction, providing activity reports and identifying opportunities for growth and engagement with our audiences.
    7. Develop, plan, and attend media briefings, institutional events, and faculty/alumni meetings.
    8. Support alumni communications, including developing alumni newsletters.
    9. Help in developing, managing and executing internal communications for the university:
  • Work closely with HR, VPAA, and management to timely and adequately communicate SFUAD’s happenings to faculty and staff
  • Develop an internal newsletter and/or other communication channels
  • Promote and help in the execution of internal events including town hall meetings
  • Provide support, guidance and insights to Student Life in their communications and outreach to students

Education, skills and experience

The ideal candidate will:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, business administration or marketing
  2. Have at least three years of experience in communications, public relations, media and marketing communications.
  3. Outstanding writing and communications skills, with a proven record in drafting communications pieces, pitching and establishing credible and effective relations with media contacts
  4. Have experience in using social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs, for marketing and communications purposes
  5. Be a motivated team player and able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, within a matrix-based organization
  6. Have outstanding organizational and project management skills.
  7. Ability to work remotely and to travel.
  8. Effective knowledge of Excel, Power Point and other MS Office programs
  9. Bilingual Spanish-English with full command of writing, speaking and reading in both languages provides added value.
