BuzzFeed is sponsoring a year-long fellowship in honor of investigative journalist Michael Hastings, who died in June in a car crash. You can read more about Hastings’ amazing work at his Wiki. His profile of General Stanley McChrystal in Rolling Stone led to the general’s resignation and won a George Polk Award.

This is the description from the BuzzFeed site: The Michael Hastings Fellowship is aimed at proven journalists with strong sources and major stories to their credit who are interested in focusing for a year on a single subject and producing a series of stories on that topic. Proposed topics may include American foreign and national security policy; federal or local counterterrorism policy; the U.S. military; whistle-blowers; government secrecy; federal law enforcement; the military-industrial complex; veterans; human rights in conflict zones; and other related topics.

Fellows receive a stipend of $100,000 and related expenses for one year. Applications are due Sept. 1. More information is available online.

One more interesting piece to note: An investigator writing in Canada Free Press is putting forth the theory that Hastings was murdered. Fueling the conspiracy theories, former State Department official Richard Clarke has said the car crash was consistent with a “car cyberattack.”
