The Rio Grande chapter of SPJ is helping local journalists attend the Journalism Under Fire conference from Dec. 5-7 at the Santa Fe Convention Center.
- SPJ will help reimburse SPJ member travel expenses!
- SPJ helped negotiate low rates for ALL New Mexico journalists.
Travel Reimbursement: The SPJ Rio Grande treasurer will reimburse up to $150 in costs for chapter members to attend the conference. Costs can include transportation, hotel, meals and registration. This is a first-come, first-serve opportunity (for the first 20 members). When you have made definite plans to attend, email Treasurer Michael Marcotte (mm@mikemarcotte.com) to get on the list!
Low Rates: A single-day coffee-only ticket (where you’re entitled to coffee and snacks during the breaks) is $8 per N.M. journalist. A single-day ticket with breakfast and lunch is $30. Other Incentives for Journalists
Women Journalists: The first 15 women journalists who apply can receive a scholarship to cover their registration costs, thanks to the International Women’s Media Foundation. See the Conference Scholarship Page. This covers a three-day ticket that includes breakfast and lunch. (To apply for this scholarship, please email journalism@sfcir.org and provide details of where you work and interest in attending, etc. For those women journalists who have already bought a ticket, you are eligible for a reimbursement, following the above instructions.)
New Mexico Press Association members: The NMPA is also providing support for its members to attend. See the Conference Scholarship Page. NMPA is offering five full scholarships for journalists at a NMPA member newspaper or Associate Members of the NMPA. This is a three-day ticket including breakfast and lunch. Conference Details
Journalism Under Fire is being organized by The Santa Fe Council on International Relations. The conference will address the following major themes:
Day 1: Freedom of the Press, Fake News, Persecution
Day 2: Journalism in Mexico and at the U.S./Mexico Border
Day 3: Local Journalism: Corporatization, Consolidation, Change
National partners include:
The Committee to Protect Journalists and The International Women’s Media Foundation.
Local partners include: The Santa Fe New Mexican, the Society of Professional Journalists Rio Grande Chapter and the New Mexico Press Association.
Highlights include
- 51 journalists coming to the event from countries all around the world. A list of their occupations and countries is here. They’ll be featured in some parallel sessions, and will also be the centerpiece of the Citizen Exchange Circles on Thursday December 6th.
- The Grand Opening Event is on Tuesday, December 4th. It is free for NM journalists, and features a panel on Justice for Journalists under Fire, featuring Jason Rezaian (WaPo), Courtney Radsch (CPJ), Jenni Monet (indigenous national freelance journalist), and Hannah Allam (BuzzFeed). It starts at 6 and ends at around 8:30 at the Convention Center. Tickets for this are available at https://journalism-under-fire.eventbrite.com.

- There will be visual displays of political cartoons, border photographs, and a virtual reality exhibit (Blindfold – where the viewer becomes an interrogated journalist in an Iranian prison).
