The amount of money pouring into political campaigns has continued to increase – and become more difficult for citizens and voters to track.
Get ready for election season in New Mexico by learning how to follow the money and navigate existing and emerging tools to track campaign contributions and expenditures.
During the morning session, trainers Eve Byron and Pete Quist from the National Institute on Money in State Politics will guide attendees through the Institute’s website, followthemoney.org, which tracks money in state political races.
Byron and Quist will also show other places to explore campaign contributions and offer examples of how to track money from unions and various industries. We’ll also talk about the challenges of following dark money in politics (501c4, 501 c5, 527s, etc).
During the afternoon session, journalists will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with trainers and other journalists to discuss individual story ideas or issues.

To encourage journalists outside the Albuquerque-Santa Fe corridor to attend the training, the Rio Grande Chapter of SPJ is offering $200 scholarships to help defray travel costs.
